With an All-State post and two All-Conference guards returning to the starting lineup, the Mustangs look to stay competitive in conference 7-4A.
Three-year letterman Ryan Farr returns for his senior season after earning All-State honors last year, and All-Conference junior guards Luke Sandlin and Carter Trent return in the backcourt. Other returning lettermen include junior posts Scott Cook and Anthony Frizzell, and newcomer Colton Capps returns for his senior year after a one-year hiatus along with junior Stephen Russell.
After losing All-Stater D.J. Williams and All-Conference guard Paul Holderfield among five lettermen from last year's squad, the Mustangs will look to sophomores Chase Cain, Jonathan Johnson, Ryan Lamberson and Michael Posey to contribute this campaign.
CAC finished last season with a 22-11 record after winning 20 of their last 22 games, with both losses at the hands of state-finalist Hamburg. The 7-4A conference champions matched the 1994-95 team as the only two squads in school history to have appeared in a Final Four.

Hosting the CAC/OrthoArkansas Invitational for the first time as a boys-only event, the Mustangs battled a tough field and emerged 1-2 after a win over Clarksville and two losses against a couple of tough 5A opponents.
In a consolation bracket game, the Mustangs defeated the Clarksville Panthers 78-61 after trailing by one at the end of the third period. In the fourth quarter, CAC continued to go inside to posts Scott Cook and Colton Capps who combined for 21 of the Mustangs 27 fourth-quarter points. Cook finished with a career-high 23 points while Capps also had a career-high 19.
Junior guard Luke Sandlin rebounded from a subpar first half to finish with 15 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and five steals, and Carter Trent finished with six points and five assists. The Mustangs also helped themselves at the charity stripe, shooting 78% for the game.
In Friday's second-round game, CAC couldn't keep up with Little Rock Christian's inside/outside combo of Tanner Bailey and Brad Horrell as the two combined for 54 points in the Warriors' 69-57 win over the Mustangs. Carter Trent led CAC with 20 points and Jonathan Johnson scored 12, but the Warriors' 7-0 run to start the third period gave them the lead for good, and LRCA knocked down 11-13 free throws in the final period to seal the game.
Thursday's first-round matchup saw the Mustangs take on 5A powerhouse Little Rock Mills, but CAC overcame first-game jitters and played well, falling 59-49 only after Mills pulled it out in the final period. Six of the ten players suited up for the Mustangs were playing their first-ever varsity game, but CAC battled tough to take a 27-26 lead at the half. Two key three-pointers and aggressive play inside gave Mills a 43-38 lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs could not get closer than three points the rest of the way before the Comets hit free throws down the stretch for the final margin.
CAC played all three tournament games without returning All-State forward Ryan Farr who is resting an injury from the football season, and three others missed time due to various injuries.
Although other teams in the tournament had played between 5-8 games prior to the tournament, the Mustangs enjoyed their first games of the season after the start of the schedule was pushed back due to the success of the CAC football program. In the past three seasons, the Mustangs have a combined record of 6-21 before football student-athletes join the team, and are 56-13 after gaining the services of all team members.
The Mustangs face a tough week against three 5A teams as they travel to Little Rock Christian Tuesday, play Morrilton Thursday in Conway and host arch-rival Pulaski Academy Saturday at Mustang Mountain.

The inaugural boys-only version of the CAC/ OrthoArkansas Invitational basketball tournament concluded with rave reviews from fans and coaches as the eight-team event saw some of the state's top teams compete at Mustang Mountain.
The tournament concluded with two fantastic finishes as Mills defeated Catholic 46-45 for third place and Pulaski Academy took a thrilling 61-59 win over Cabot for the championship.
Tournament MVP honors went to Pulaski Academy's Anson Bartlett, and teammate Spencer Keith joined Cabot's Adam Sterrenberg, Mills' Michael Jackson, Catholic's John Ukadike and North Pulaski's Dequan Bryant on the All-Tournament Team.
Over a dozen college coaches attended this year's tournament, and a big thanks goes out to tournament sponsors OrthoArkansas, Absolute Athlete, Hart Lazenby Commercial, NovaSys Health, AT&T, Entergy, Waste Management, James H. Cone Construction Management, Cross-Eyed Pig barbecue, FatSam's Catering and Blue Coast Burrito for their contributions in making this tournament one of the state's best.

The Mustang basketball squad had no answer for eight first-half three-pointers by the Little Rock Christian Academy Warriors as they fell 60-49 in a nonconference game at LRCA. Returning All-State forward Ryan Farr saw limited action in his first game of the season and along with Carter Trent led the Mustangs with 10 points.
The Mustangs battled in the first quarter as Trent and Farr combined for nine points with CAC trailing 15-13. But in the second quarter, the Warriors heated up from the arc as three different players hit five three-pointers, and Little Rock Christian led 34-22 at the half.
CAC held the Warriors to only eleven points in the third quarter but managed to score only nine points, and LRCA hit 7-9 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Mustangs at bay.
CAC travels to Conway for a Thursday matchup with Morrilton at Hendrix University's new arena before hosting Pulaski Academy Saturday at Mustang Mountain.

The Mustang basketball squad led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter before scoring only one point in the second period, and their second-half rally fell short as they dropped a 56-42 decision to Morrilton Thursday in Conway. Sophomore Chase Cain led CAC with 13 points.
A total of 14 first-half turnovers resulted in the 17-1 second quarter as the Devil Dogs also controlled the boards. The Mustangs actually outscored Morrilton in the second half, but just couldn't overcome the lopsided second period.
CAC hosts Pulaski Academy Saturday at Mustang Mountain with the varsity girls' beginning at 6:00 p.m. followed by the varsity boys.

The Mustang basketball squad battled valiantly against the larger Pulaski Academy Bruins before falling 58-50 in a nonconference game at Mustang Mountain. Sophomore Jonathan Johnson led CAC with 12 points while Carter Trent finished with 11 and Scott Cook added nine.
The Mustangs held a lead through most of the first half until a Bruin run in the last two minutes tied the game. PA then hit a long three-pointer at the buzzer for a 32-29 halftime score and their first lead of the game.
In the third quarter, PA began to pull away as the Mustangs fell prey to the Bruins' size advantage. Johnson scored seven points in the quarter to limit the deficit to 48-39 at the end of the third quarter. In the final period, the Mustangs held PA to only two field goals, but the Bruins went five of eight shooting from the line to keep the Mustangs at bay.
CAC plays in the Pulaski Academy Holiday Tournament this week as they take on Star City Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the first round.

The Mustang basketball squad held the lead at halftime and at the end of the third quarter, but the Star City Bulldogs controlled the final period for a 55-51 victory in the first round of the John Sawatski Invitational at Pulaski Academy.
CAC led 40-34 entering the fourth quarter before surrendering 21 points to the Bulldogs in the final frame. Carter Trent led the Mustangs with 18 points while Jonathan Johnson, Scott Cook and Colton Capps scored eight apiece.
The Mustangs had gone on a 14-3 run to end the first half, taking a 30-22 halftime lead. CAC then pushed the lead to nine points, 34-25, at the 5:29 mark of the third quarter before Star City began its comeback.
CAC plays Shiloh Christian in the consolation bracket today at 5:00 p.m. at Pulaski Academy.

The Mustang basketball squad got past a slow start to post a 55-45 victory over the Shiloh Christian Saints in the consolation bracket of the John Sawatski Invitational at Pulaski Academy.
CAC led 17-12 at the half as both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm. The Mustangs then scored 16 points in the third quarter and 22 in the final frame as they hit 8 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Carter Trent led the Mustangs with 20 points and four steals while Luke Sandlin finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs play Palestine Wheatley in the consolation final Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Pulaski Academy.

Although the Mustangs fought back to take the lead behind Carter Trent's eight fourth-quarter points, the Patriots regained the lead by going inside before finishing off CAC at the free throw line for the win.
Trent led the Mustangs with 16 points as he led the team in scoring each of the tournament's three games. Chase Cain finished with eleven points against the Patriots while Luke Sandlin scored ten points to go with six rebounds and four steals. Scott Cook pulled down nine rebounds.
The Mustangs now have three days off for the Christmas break before playing in the Heaven's Best Tournament at Little Rock's Hall High School. CAC takes on Pulaski Robinson in first-round action Wednesday, December 26, at 10:00 a.m. in the first of four games in four days.

After closing the deficit to two points at the half, turnovers finally got the best of the Mustang basketball squad as they dropped a 60-50 decision to Robinson in the first round of the Heaven's Best tournament held at Little Rock's Hall High School.
CAC's defense kept them in the game in the first half as they trailed 22-20 entering the third period. But the Mustangs' allowed the Senators to build a double-digit as they committed 29 turnovers for the game. CAC battled back to cut the lead to six points with about a minute and a half remaining in the game but could get no closer the rest of the way.
Scott Cook led the Mustangs in scoring with 14 points -- all in the second half -- and Colton Capps finished with 12 points -- all in the first half. Jonathan Johnson scored ten points and Luke Sandlin once again led the team in rebounding with nine rebounds.
The Mustangs now face the Bearden Bears Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the consolation bracket after the Bears dropped a first-round game to Little Rock's Central High School.

The Mustangs used 19 points from senior Colton Capps on the inside and five three-pointers from junior Carter Trent on the outside to take a 70-49 victory over Bearden in the consolation bracket of the Heaven's Best tournament held at Little Rock's Hall High School.
CAC led 33-25 at the half after the Bears cut the lead from 14 points in the last three minutes. But the Mustangs took control early in the second half as Capps and junior Scott Cook combined for 22 points, and the Mustangs hit 8-11 second-half free throws to seal the win. Besides Capps' game-high 19 points, Trent finished with 15 points and five assists and Cook scored 13 points to go with five rebounds. Anthony Frizzell finished with six rebounds while Luke Sandlin had seven assists.
The Mustangs face the Marion Patriots Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation bracket semifinals after the Patriots' three-point win over Memphis Trezevant in consolation bracket play.

The Mustangs used a tough defensive effort and smart play down the stretch for a well-earned 58-43 victory in the consolation bracket semifinals of the Heaven's Best tournament held at Little Rock's Hall High School.
CAC led by as much as seven in the first half before the Patriots stormed back to cut the lead to 23-21 at halftime. But the Mustangs came out in the second half and gave up just 22 points while controlling the tempo to put up 35 points in the second half. CAC helped their cause by knocking down 77% of their free throws for the game as they increased their lead over the last five minutes of play.
Carter Trent led CAC with 16 points while Colton Capps and Jonathan Johnson scored nine points each. Luke Sandlin finished with eight points, eight rebounds and five assists while Scott Cook scored seven and Anthony Frizzell had four points and a season-high seven boards.
The Mustangs advance to the consolation bracket finals Saturday at 2:30 p.m. as they take on Northwood, Louisiana, who defeated Franklin Road Academy, Tennessee, to advance.

The Mustangs used a tough defensive effort and held off a Timberwolves second-half run to claim a well-earned 70-56 victory over Shreveport (LA) Northwood in the consolation championship of the Heaven's Best tournament held at Little Rock's Hall High School.
CAC took the lead early in the first half and got it to double-digits before the Timberwolves cut the lead to four points. But the Mustangs stretched it back out in the final minute to lead 36-28 at halftime. Carter Trent scored 23 of his game-high 31 points in the first half.
Northwood scored early in the second half to cut it to four points once again before CAC's Jonathan Johnson scored nine points in a run that built the Mustangs' lead to 20 with 7:30 to play.
But the Timberwolves put together a run to cut it to six points with 1:45 left before Luke Sandlin hit a three-pointer to put CAC back up by nine. Northwood then answered with a three of their own to cut it back to six points, but Scott Cook answered inside for the Mustangs and Sandlin stole the inbounds pass forcing the Timberwolves to foul the rest of the way. CAC shot a staggering 87% from the line for the game to seal the win.
Scott Cook scored ten points and pulled down nine rebounds, and Sandlin and Johnson both finished with nine points and four rebounds.

The Mustangs used transition baskets in the first half and went inside in the second half to take a 72-43 victory over the Nashville Scrappers to open 7-4A conference play.
CAC led 39-24 at halftime as guards Carter Trent and Luke Sandlin scored a combined 22 first-half points. Forwards Colton Capps and Scott Cook then took over as they scored 22 of CAC's 33 second-half points.
Sandlin finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and dishing out ten assists to go with five steals. Capps led CAC's scorers with 19 points while pulling down eight rebounds and Cook collected nine boards to go with 14 points. Trent finished with 15 points and five steals.
The Mustangs now turn their attention to the Mena Bearcats as they continue 7-4A conference play Tuesday at Mustang Mountain. The varsity girls tipoff the action at 5:00 p.m. followed by the varsity boys.

CAC held the Mena Bearcats to 16 points in the first half on the way to a 59-41 7-4A conference victory Tuesday at Mustang Mountain.
The Mustangs ran out to a 16-10 first-quarter lead before getting defensive in the second period to outscore the Bearcats 18-6. CAC then scored the first six points of the third quarter to lead 40-16 and led by as much as 26 before Mena cut into the lead in the final period.
Carter Trent and Scott Cook scored 16 points each while Anthony Frizzell controlled the boards with eight rebounds. Luke Sandlin chipped in eight points and dished out seven assists. The Mustangs helped themselves at the line, shooting 77%, and forced 18 turnovers in the game.
CAC now faces four conference games on the road beginning with Friday's matchup at Ashdown. The Mustangs return home Thursday, January 24, hosting the Oak Grove Hornets.

Tied at halftime, the Mustangs slowly pulled away in the second half for a 50-42 conference victory over the Fountain Lake Cobras Tuesday at the Snake Pit in their second of four consecutive road games.
Carter Trent hit five three-pointers on the way to a game-high 17 points, and sophomore Ryan Lamberson came off the bench to score 11. Luke Sandlin finished with nine and J.J. Johnson chipped in six points.
The Cobras trailed through most of a low-scoring first quarter until a three-pointer at the end gave them a 7-6 lead. The Mustangs responded with a run that gave them a five-point lead midway through the period until Fountain Lake battled back to tie the score, 21-21, at the half.
The Mustangs responded by outscoring the Cobras 19-14 in the third period behind three Trent treys as he and junior Luke Sandlin combined for 15 points in the period. CAC then held off Fountain Lake in the final period by giving up only seven points and hitting seven of eight free throws down the stretch.

Leading by four points entering the fourth quarter, the Mustangs could not ground the Arkansas Baptist Eagles' offense as they exploded for 21 points in the final period to take a 57-50 home decision over CAC.
The Mustangs trailed 27-25 at halftime but outscored the Eagles 15-9 in the third quarter as five different Mustangs scored. But the Eagles evened the game in the first minute of the fourth quarter and took the lead for good with just under four minutes remaining before hitting nine of eleven free throws to secure the win down the stretch.
Carter Trent scored 17 points for CAC while Colton Capps chipped in 12. The Mustangs forced 18 turnovers and held the Eagles to only four offensive rebounds but could not overcome Arkansas Baptist's 52% shooting as they repeatedly scored in the paint.

The Mustangs controlled the game after taking a 16-11 lead in the first quarter and led 34-24 at the half before the Hornets fought their way back to trail by only six points early in the fourth quarter. But the Mustangs responded with a 26-point period including hitting 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Colton Capps scored 14 and Scott Cook chipped in nine for the Mustangs while Anthony Frizzell and J.J. Johnson each had six.
