Go Mustangs!

Erik Hearnes won his first individual state title this season and returns for his senior year.

Hearnes Wins Individual Title, Team Takes Third

Junior Erik Hearnes shot a 72, earning medalist honors at the 4A state tournament at Rolling Hills Country Club in Pocahontas. The boys' team finished runner-up with a collective score of 230, five strokes behind champion Arkansas Baptist, before losing a playoff with Highland for the second consecutive year. Senior Daniel Bingham and sophomore Alex Hewitt both shot 79 while freshman Cole Wallace shot 83.

"We had a great year," said head coach Steve Quattlebaum. "We beat (Arkansas) Baptist in district and the guys did real well."

Hearnes now advances to the overall state tournament to be held Thursday, October 11, at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock.

Welch Commits to A-State During Early Signing Period

Jenny Welch has signed her name to the dotted line and will be golfing at the division I level next year at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.

Welch won her third consecutive individual state championship this season while finishing third in the overall state tournament. Welch also won the Arkansas Womens' Golf Association (AWGA) junior stroke play championship in the summer while winning the silver medal and the bronze team medal at The Games Down Under in Sydney, Australia in July of 2006.

Welch was named the Arkansas State Golf Association Junior Girls Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007 and was named the Arkansas Women’s Golf Association Junior Player of the Year in 2007. She won eight tournaments over the summer, including the Joe Boone Memorial at the Jonesboro Country Club, the ASGA Junior Girls Match Play and the AWGA Junior Stroke at Hot Springs Country Club.

"It is amazing how hard she has worked for this," said golf coach Steve Quattlebaum. "She played every single day this summer, rain or shine. She has put in the work and it is rewarding to see it pay off for her."

Welch Finishes Third Overall, Hearnes Takes Seventh

Senior Jenny Welch shot a six-over-par 78 to take third-place honors at the Overall State Golf Tournament Thursday at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock. Welch, who two weeks ago won the 4A individual state title for the third year in a row, finished four strokes behind Mary Michael Maggio of Conway and Haley Sanders of Rogers, who both shot 74. Maggio ended up taking first place by shooting an eagle on the first playoff hole.

Junior Erik Hearnes shot a 116 that placed him seventh, shooting an 80 on the first 18 holes and a one-over-par 36 on the last nine holes. Hearnes, who two weeks ago won the 4A individual state title, finished ten strokes off Marion's Josh Alford. Alford's round of 106 bested second-place finisher Alex Carpenter by one stroke.

Welch Three-peats at State

Senior Jenny Welch shot a 72 at the Lions' Den Golf Club in Dardanelle to win the individual state title for the third year in a row.

Her unprecedented 14-stroke victory moves her into a league of her own, and Welch now advances to the overall state tournament October 11 where she finished fourth last year.
