Lady Mustangs Face Tough Tests Early

The Lady Mustangs are off and running this season and have played a tough schedule early.

Playing in the annual Spikefest tournament Saturday, CAC went .500 in six pool play games before defeating Malvern in two straight and advance to the tournament semifinals.

But the Lady Mustangs just couldn't get past 7A Little Rock Central, dropping two games 25-20, 25-22 as CAC lost to the Lady Tigers for the second time this season with both matches being very close.

In the first game of the semifinals it was tied 18-18 before Central took seven of the next nine points for the game. Game two was even tougher as the Lady Mustangs led 22-21 before the Lady Tigers served the game out for the match.

The Lady Mustangs next host Mills Wednesday in their first home match of the year. The junior varsity will begin the action at 4:00 p.m. followed by the varsity.

Playing their first home match of the season, the Lady Mustangs used an aggressive game at the net to take down the Mills Lady Comets 25-15, 25-21, 25-13.

CAC hosts Episcopal Thursday with the junior high beginning at 4:00 p.m. followed by the junior varsity and the varsity.

In their second home match in two days, the Lady Mustangs dispatched Episcopal in three straight games to move to 4-2 on the year. CAC used tough defense and solid serving to win 25-19, 25-18, 25-17.

The Lady Mustangs are now off for the Labor Day weekend and next host Batesville Southside Thursday at Mustang Mountain. The junior varsity starts the action at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity.

The Lady Mustang volleyball team wasted no time in dispatching Batesville Southside 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 for their third consecutive win.

Lindsey Barnes served for 11 of CAC's 25 points in game one before Sarah Elkins took the bulk of the work in games two and three, serving for a combined 17 points. The Lady Mustangs used quick defense and aggressive net play to move to 5-2 on the season.

CAC now turns their attention to the Clinton Lady Jackets in their first conference game of the season Tuesday in Clinton. The junior high starts the action at 4:30 p.m. following by the junior varsity and varsity teams.

The Lady Mustangs made short work of the Clinton Lady Jackets with a 25-8, 25-19, 25-9 victory. CAC used an aggressive game at the net in their first conference game of the season.

Now 6-2 on the season, the Lady Mustangs next travel to Lonoke Thursday in a conference matchup.

The Lady Mustangs (7-3) took the seventh seed out of pool play and lost in the first round of bracket play in the Lady Cyclone Invitational in Russellville.

"It was a defensive breakdown," said CAC head coach Brooke Parker. "That's it."

The Lady Mustangs played two games each against three opponents in pool play to end up with a 2-4 record. CAC lost four games to Harrison and Russellville and won two games against Waldron. They then played Alma in the first round of bracket play and dropped two straight games in a match plagued with defensive errors.

The Lady Mustangs next play at home in a double-header Tuesday against Lutheran in their first home conference matches of the season.

The Lady Mustangs (9-3, 4-0) took a pair of matches over Lutheran Tuesday at Mustang Mountain to remain undefeated in conference play.

After losing the first three points, Lindsey Barnes served 14 points in a row and CAC never looked back, winning the first match 25-14, 25-17. The second match went as quickly with the Lady Mustangs taking a 25-17, 25-14 victory. Barnes served seven of the final eight Mustang points to close the match.

The Lady Mustangs next play at Oak Grove Thursday in a four-match night as the 7th grade team starts the action at 4:30 p.m. followed by the 8th grade, junior high and varsity teams.

The Lady Mustangs remained undefeated in conference play with a decisive three-game victory over the Oak Grove Lady Hornets, dishing out a 25-6, 25-7, 25-12 beating.

Jordan Henderson served for 10 points in the first game, and Lindsey Barnes served for a combined 19 points in the next two games.

The Lady Mustangs next play at Episcopal Monday before hosting conference-foes Marianna and Clinton on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

The Lady Mustangs traveled to Episcopal Monday and came away with a nonconference victory in four games. CAC took a 25-18, 26-28, 25-18, 26-24 win in a tough battle that saw aggressive play on both sides of the net.

The Lady Mustang volleyball team dispatched the Clinton Lady Yellow Jackets in three straight games -- 25-9, 25-16, 25-11 -- Thursday at Mustang Mountain to remain undefeated in conference play at 7-0.

"We are starting to play well," said head coach Brooke Parker. "But we still have areas we need to keep working to improve."

CAC is now 13-3 on the season and hosts conference-foe Lonoke Tuesday in their only match of the week.

The Lady Mustang volleyball team clinched at least a share of the 4A-Central conference title they won last season as they swept the Lonoke Lady Jackrabbits in three straight games -- 25-18, 25-14, 25-21 -- Tuesday at Mustang Mountain. CAC now has at least a two-match lead over every team in the conference with two matches remaining and are undefeated in conference play at 8-0.

CAC jumped out in game one to a 15-3 lead before Lonoke went on a 12-3 run to cut it to 18-15, but the Lady Mustangs won the next seven of ten for the win.

In game two, CAC again jumped out to a big lead at 14-4, but Lonoke again came back to trail only 16-12 before the Lady Mustangs scored nine of the last eleven points.

Game three followed the same script as the first two games with the Lady Mustangs leading 7-1 and 13-4 before the Lady Jackrabbits stormed back to cut the lead to 21-19. But CAC responded with two key points before finishing off the victory with a 25-21 decision.

"The girls have practiced hard and played well tonight," said head coach Brooke Parker. "We need to continue to improve our mental toughness and learn to finish games after building a lead."

CAC is now 14-3 on the season and hosts Pulaski Academy on Monday in a nonconference match before hosting Oak Grove Tuesday and traveling to Marianna Thursday for their final two conference matches of the season. A win in either match will clinch the conference title outright for the second consecutive year.

The Lady Mustangs warmed up for their final two conference matches with a quick 3-0 victory over the Pulaski Academy Lady Bruins Monday at Mustang Mountain.

CAC used potent serving from Lindsey Barnes to take the first game 25-16. The Lady Mustangs controlled the second game from start to finish as they led 24-18 before giving up five straight points until finishing with a 25-22 decision. In game three, Barnes started the game serving ten straight points, Lauren Tankersley owned the net and the Lady Mustangs never looked back. They led 17-1 before the bench came in to finish with a 25-5 massacre.

"It's fun to be able to watch the girls continue to improve," said head coach Brooke Parker. "It's great to be able to get the bench in to get them some experience."

CAC now hosts conference-foe Oak Grove Tuesday in their final home match of the season before traveling to take on Marianna Thursday to conclude conference play.

The Lady Mustang volleyball team clinched the 2-4A conference title with an easy win over Oak Grove in three straight games -- 25-6, 25-11, 25-11 -- Tuesday at Mustang Mountain.

CAC was in control throughout the match using strong net play from seniors Sarah Elkins, Katie Harrison, Jordan Henderson and Lauren Tankersley, and dominant defense and passing from seniors Lindsey Barnes and Carma Corzine. Barnes served the first 11 points of the final game all six seniors will play at Mustang Mountain.

CAC (16-3, 9-0 2-4A) has now clinched the top seed in the district tournament and will receive a bye to the semifinals. With the semifinal appearance, the Lady Mustangs have also secured a return trip to the state tournament held in Jonesboro October 30-November 1.

CAC travels to Marianna Thursday for their final conference game of the season before traveling October 18 to Batesville Southside for their final regular-season match of the year.

The Lady Mustangs turned a loss into a win after being notified that Little Rock Central has forfeited four games this season for utilizing ineligible personnel. While the August 21 match with the 7A school does not change conference standings, CAC's overall record now stands at 17-2 entering today's final conference match at Marianna Lee.

The Lady Mustangs used a powerful offense and airtight defense to take a 25-15, 25-14, 25-11 victory over Marianna Lee Wednesday at Mustang Mountain. The victory propels CAC to a 19-2 overal record entering Thursday's nonconference matchup at Batesville Southside.

CAC will take the 4A-Central conference's first seed into district tournament play next week before heading to Jonesboro for the state tournament in their fifth appearance in a row.

After defeating Lutheran in three straight games, the Lady Mustangs faced a tough Lonoke Lady Jackrabbit squad on their home floor and dropped a tough five-game match -- 25-20, 22-25, 26-24, 25-19, 11-15 -- to take the conference's second seed into state tournament play next week at Valley View.

"Lonoke played well," said head coach Brooke Parker. "But we will bounce back. Our girls know what they are capable of achieving."

The Lady Mustangs earned their spot in the final earlier in the day with a 25-6, 25-9, 25-14 victory over Lutheran in the semifinals.

CAC enters the state tournament with a 21-3 overall record after winning the 4A-Central conference championship with a 10-0 record and takes on Fountain Lake in the first round.
